This stunning coin dates back to the beginning of the 19th Century, when Gibraltar was constantly being battled by small sieges and attacks from Spain and France. Quarts (Quartos) were used in Gibraltar since about 1800, first being merchant tokens. However in 1842, the United Kingdom produced a currency set for circulation in Gibraltar, which included the Half Quart (this coin), 1 Quart and 2 Quarts. All of these coins bear the same design, and the same effigy of Queen Victoria on the obverse.
